Lady Cats dictate tempo in 20-point win over Niles
THREE RIVERS — The Three Rivers varsity girls’ basketball team dictated the tempo in a 59-39 non-league win at home Tuesday over Niles.
“We were able to play at our tempo for a majority of the game except for a five-minute span in the third where we played with no energy and did not communicate. I was very pleased with our effort defensively,” said Three Rivers coach Jason Bingaman.
Three Rivers led Niles 12-5 after the first quarter and 24-13 entering halftime. Niles came out in the third quarter and eventually took a 32-30 lead before Three Rivers scored the final seven points of the third quarter to take a 37-32 lead into the final period. Three Rivers managed to outscore its guests 29-7 over the last 10 minutes of the game.
“Again we had balanced scoring which is a product of us getting in transition and getting the ball to open teammates. I was proud of how we responded after getting down in the third. We improved on some things since our action Friday, which is all a coach can ask for,” Bingaman said.
Arionne Fowlkes had 16 points, three assists, five rebounds and two steals for Three Rivers. Cara Smith added two points and four boards. Hadley Miller chipped in five points, four assists, six rebounds and two steals. Morgan Schneider added four points, three assists and two steals. Rhyeli Krause finished with six points and five boards. Tessa Hawkins had eight points and two steals. Diamond Carter added nine points and four rebounds. Kenzie Borst had two steals for the Lady Cats, who were 22-of-47 shooting from the floor and 11-of-24 at the foul stripe.
“Arionne did a nice job attacking the hoop and we got some big minutes from Diamond off the bench in the first quarter and Tessa Hawkins had seven points in the third quarter when Niles had taken the lead briefly,” Bingaman said. “Morgan gave us some good minutes off the bench, Hadley, Izzy (Taylor) and Libby (Judsen) all played tough inside.”
