BATTLE CREEK — Monday’s boys’ basketball opener between Mendon and host Battle Creek St. Philip went right down to the wire.
Unfortunately the end result wasn’t what Mendon coach David Swanwick would have preferred as his Hornets fell 56-53 to the Fighting Tigers.
Mendon jumped out to a 12-9 lead after one period and took a 31-22 lead into halftime. But St. Philip whittled its deficit to one, 40-39, entering the fourth quarter. The hosts outscored their guests by four in the final eight minutes to seize the win.
Lukas Crotser scored 14 points for Mendon, while Greg Gifford added 11 and Hunter Lovell 10 for the Hornets (0-1). Keaton Crotser added nine points for Mendon.
Lovell added nine rebounds, Gifford eight and Braxton Samson had five boards and four assists.
