Impacting lives through scholarships
CENTREVILLE — “Thank you for your contribution to the college and the lives you have impacted through scholarships,” Christel Schwartz of Colon told attendees of Glen Oaks Community College’s “Diamonds, Donors and Dollars for Scholars” gala on the college concourse Friday, Oct. 7. “Thank you for supporting us in following our dreams.”
Schwartz, who received the Dr. George R. Hoekzema Business Studies Scholarship, said that she has seen how hard students work to get where they are going, and the light in their eyes and the weight lifted off their shoulders when they get scholarships. In her own case, her son just started pre-kindergarten and “thanks to you, I have been able to enjoy every minute.”
Glen Oaks Community College Foundation president Mike Doe told the group that the Foundation had given $71,000 to more than 40 students this year, and $35,000 toward athletics.
“There’s $106,000 flowing the right direction,” he said.
The Foundation has “a little north of $3 million in assets and continues to gain endowments,” he said. “It makes a difference.”
If one ever questioned lost sight of the impact, “go to graduation,” he said.
Glen Oaks president Dr. David Devier talked about how “Glen Oaks is on the Move.”
“We’ve challenged ourselves to work longer, harder and smarter,” he said. “People have bought into our vision. It’s rewarding to be involved with an organization where people are all going where we want to go.”
He noted the college’s responsibility to make the most of the $6 million annually entrusted to it by taxpayers.
