Six jailed after obstructing police

STURGIS — Six people were lodged at the St. Joseph County Jail following an incident Friday, Dec. 9 around 1:43 a.m., according to the Sturgis Police Department.
After officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the 400 block of W. West St. for a traffic violation, the vehicle pulled into a private drive and the male and female in the vehicle fled into a private residence.
Police secured the scene and obtained a search warrant for the residence. Sturgis Police and St. Joseph County sheriff’s deputies entered the home and located the suspects hidden in the basement, it was determined that the occupants of the home had worked to conceal the suspects from police by building a temporary structure in the basement.
The original two suspects were arrested on several outstanding warrants as well as resisting and obstructing police. The four occupants of the home were charged with obstructing police as well as harboring a fugitive.
